Max's Baptism

We had a very special week around here. Max's birthday bash started out last Saturday after Darreck and I got home from a weekend away in Bozeman. We ate great food, went to a Tim McGraw and Faith Hill concert, then came home to eight eight-year-old boys. The bottom line: Max had fun and that's pretty much all that matters. The fun continued Tuesday- his actual birthday. He brought the traditional sugar cookie sheet cookie to school, and the whole family went out to dinner at Fuddruckers. My parents also took him to my sister's last high school band concert. I was sad I missed it, but Max said she did great.

Yesterday, Saturday, Max was baptized and confirmed a member of the church. He looked forward to it for months, and I was so impressed by his preparation and deep understanding of what he was committing to. The actual service was a little bit of a fiasco. In my normal Type-A way, I took care of everything myself- programs, invitations, speakers, musical numbers, and refreshments. The only thing- the ONLY thing- we delegated was filling the font, and the person assigned to do it forgot. We had to delay the baptism and switch rooms for the service. At the end of the day, however, all was well. It really was great. My favorite part was the blessing Darreck gave him when Max was confirmed. Max was admonished to listen to the spirit always. He was also promised that he would have the chance to serve a mission, and that during that mission, he would have many experiences that would strengthen his testimony. Finally, he was told he has the gift of music and that his gift would allow others to feel the spirit. It was a beautiful blessing- Darreck's specialty.

We love our sweet Max! He is thoughtful, inquisitive, intelligent, and kind. He is my greatest helper, and everyone who meets him is impressed with his maturity. I worry sometimes that he's trying to grow up too fast, but I appreciate his brothers' abilities to put him in his place when he gets a little bossy. We are so blessed to have Max in our lives.
