End of Summer Blowout

Everyone in the rest of Great Falls goes back to school tomorrow, and even though Darreck's been back for over a week, we still decided to celebrate since Darreck had the day off. We started the morning feeding the ducks at Gibson Park, came home for a nap, went to the spray park, got some chicken and had a picnic at Ryan dam, then capped off the night by a family bike ride. Pretty much a perfect day!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when others (military families mostly!) complain about Great Falls, especially when they spend 90% of their time on base (and the rest at Walmart). I love our hometown for so many reasons. There are so many beautiful, family friendly places to go- especially in the summer. We've had so much fun on the River's Edge Trail, at Voyagers' games, at Giant Springs, and playing on the greenbelt behind our house. We have such a great life, and we're so lucky to live where we do.

Darreck's 26th Birthday

The fun started on Saturday when we had a little party in our backyard for him. Darreck whined and moaned all weak about a party, but he ended up having a great time (like I knew he would). The kids from all the families played great together, and it was nice to get in some adult conversation. Some weeks I really feel like I don't get enough of that!

Sunday, his actual birthday, we had his family over to my parents house for surf and turf. We get to choose our birthday Sunday dinner, and I'm usually a big fan of Darreck's choices! He was also pretty excited this year about his presents, and he didn't guess any of them beforehand (a first since I've known him). Max and I got him a new bike helmet, a Vandals hoodie, and an iPod. I was so proud of myself this year, considering how hard he can be to shop for!

We had fun celebrating him, but it never feels like enough. I'm so grateful he was not only born, but also that he chose my to spend all of his birthdays with me. I'm lucky to have such a sweet, caring, sensitive man. He works incredibly hard to support our family, and is just, flat-out, a ton of fun. Happy birthday Dee!!!!

Summer Traditions

Major home projects have become a summer tradition around here. Last Friday I finally got tired of looking at our ugly cabinets, so I shanghaied Darreck into service. We refinished the cabinets and painted the counter tops with special linoleum paint. The counter top paint was ridiculous- picture painting with Elmer's Glue- but for $20 the results were well worth it until we can afford the counters we really want. The cabinets, however, turned out great! My only regret is that the pictures don't do it justice. Oh, and I don't have a before picture of the bathroom because it was sort of a last minute decision to do it. Now summer can end happily :)

Summer-time Blues (and 200 post!)

This summer has been painfully boring. No, seriously. Darreck spent all June working- doing camps, working at the cemetery, and a ton of homework. July we battled the car and other minor catastrophes. So, a few weeks ago, we decided no more. We sat down with a calendar and listed all the things we wanted to do this summer and hadn't got around to yet, and we assigned each activity a day. Because, really, life is too short to have a sucky summer.

We just got past our first week and we went to the fair (twice), went swimming, went on a long family bike ride, found a new park, and had a good, old-fashioned family movie night, complete with ridiculous amounts of junk food. Tomorrow we're going to camp in my parent's backyard- well, make dinner in the fire pit, pitch a tent, sing silly songs, then go home to sleep. We're also going to another baseball game, attending the community band concert, going swimming again, and hiking up to Memorial Falls on Saturday. In fact, we have something planned every day until Darreck goes back to work on the 22nd. I'll let you know how it all goes.

I think that's my single biggest fear about getting older. I hate the thought of missing out on anything. I want to experience as many new things and meet as many new people as I can, but life so often gets in the way. Well, life and a lack of money, that is :) I can't do much about the money right now, but I can make sure we experience everything we can in our own town. I may have lived here my whole life, but I still feel like there is so much more to see and do. I figure that if you only get one chance here on earth, and let's face it, that's all any of us will get, we might as well make the absolute most of it.

Fair Time

The fair is in town, yet again, and I got roped into it, yet again. Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to it until the day we had designated to go, and then I started getting more and more pumped about it. Something about the fair always draws me in- must be all the crazy good food.

Anyways, Kayla, Darreck, and Max all got wristbands while I gracefully bowed out. Turns out that Kayla should have also- she's the only person who gets more motion sick than I do, and that's saying something. Luckily, they ended the day with very few tears and no vomit, successful on all accounts. Max, in his fair ride debut, was a little trooper. He loved everything, although the favorites were the choo-choo train (duh) and the ginormous slide. Too, too cute!

Last but not least, I ate more deep-fat fried food yesterday than I have the whole rest of the year combined, and it was worth it. Ice cream, blooming, onion, fresh squeezed lemonade, and lime-chipolte hot wings to top it all of. Bliss and not to be repeated until next year. I like my clothes, and fitting into them is a priority :)
